Deliberations

We're a month into it, but eLearn Magazine published the predictions of 23 leading e-learning pundits for 2008. Michael Feldstein predicts that VLEs will start to open to personal web services, as I predicted two years ago. Jonathan Levy sees us at a turning point in corporate learning with more requests for systems that dynamically capture tacit knowledge and expertise. Looking through the list, I see many are talking up user-created content. I like Karl Kapps comment that "formalized 'instructional design' will begin to look more like 'instructional assembly" that turn "disaggregated [learner-created] pieces of related content into a coherent flow". But Ben Watson notes the supermarket effect that "competing demands for attention [by the plethora of web services] will drive people to single-source as much of their learning as possible." The editor-in-chief Lisa Neal appears to see tensions growing between expert- and democratically-created 'knowledge'. With her comment about 'prioritization' for learning she seems reluctant to let go of expert rule as the final arbitrator of quality. In terms of my study about citizen learning, I find this the most interesting area.
