Strengthening Our Nation’s Democracy 2
Sandy Heierbacher, NCDD Director, is one of several deliberative democrats invited this week to talk to Obama Administration staff about implementing better public engagement. There are hints that they are addressing hard questions, like how should:
- public engagement relate to community organising?
- deliberative processes be shown as inclusive and non-threatening to the political right?
- the deliberative lobby work cooperatively with the Government?
- US law (constitutive or legislative) recognise the right to public engagement?
It's all moving quickly. I am thrilled to have shifted into this discipline when I did. But a cadre in Washington is a far cry from a revolution. We need quiet marches for deliberative democracy before I'll let myself get too excited! I wonder where my placards from the 1970s have gone?
