UK: Power2010 Deliberative Poll

Power2010 was a Deliberative Poll held in the UK last weekend. Similar in many ways to our Citizens' Parliament, they addressed a broad question about how to improve their democratic system. The following video is produced by Power2010. At the end we see participants talk about the work that deliberation does:

Participant 1: It's been good to meet people who don't think like me, who have completely different views. But then to find out why.

Participant 2: It's really interesting. It's actually quite a good learning process for me. I don't think I knew an awful lot about politics and its processes. And I'm learning a lot here today.

Participant 1: In a few instances, I myself, I've actually been reformed to a different way of thinking.

Participant 2: It's fired me up to find out more about the political process.

Channel 4 in the UK covered the event. As is typical of the broadcast media, they tend to focus on the ends rather than the Deliberative Poll as a communicative means in itself. Participants understand that there is no guarantee of influence, but realise that deliberative processes can be usefully applied in the future.
