If you think, vote Greens

One of my favourite TV programs is Gruen Transfer (renamed Gruen Nation during the federal election campaign). It’s hosted by the entertaining and quick-witted Wil Anderson and co-produced by the indefatigable Andrew Denton. The show is about how media promotion is conceived and what ads achieve. The focus is inevitably on TV ads, and during the election it’s all about what we see on TV.

For a segment called The Pitch in each show, a couple of advertising “creatives” are briefed with a challenge. Usually, it’s for something that seems impossible to sell, but for the election we get the sort of ads that we should actually be seeing instead of the smearing, distorted rubbish we have to contend with ad nausea. This past week we see a quick ad made by ethical agency Republic of Everyone for the Greens, who lack budget to make and propel a lot of media attention.

Unfortunately, the ABC can’t release the ad for the Greens to actually use, or be seen to be playing favourites. But the ad is on YouTube (and shown on the Green’s homepage), and I’m just doing my part to make sure you see it. :-)
